Project Description
The Simulation-based Optimisation with Dynamic Domains (OptCutCell) project is a three year project funded by the Research Council of Norway as part of the FRINATEK program. The project is hosted by the Biomedical Computing Department at Simula Research Laboratory. The OptCutCell project aims to develop mathematical methods and generic, high-level software to solve optimisation problems governed by partial differential equations with dynamic domains, and to apply these methods to a set of research questions stemming from biomedicine and renewable energy. The Biomedical Computing department (BioComp) is driven by medical challenges in researching new simulation technology. Our research is strongly multi-disciplinary, with teams of experts in physical modelling, mathematics, numerical methods, scientific software development, bioengineering, medical research, and clinical treatment. The department is a driving force behind the development of FEniCS project, a collaborative project for the development of innovative concepts and tools for automated scientific computing, with a particular focus on automated solution of differential equations by finite element methods.
Responsibilities
We are seeking a 3 year full time PhD student at Simula Research Laboratory to work on PDE-constrained optimisation with dynamic domains using the finite element methods. The work will be performed in the context of the FEniCS Project (fenicsproject.org) and dolfin-adjoint (dolfin-adjoint.org), winner of the 2015 Wilkinson Prize for Numerical Software. The successful candidate will work on numerical methods for solving PDEs on multiple meshes, computing sensitivities using automatic differentiation, and implementing these methods with a focus on a high degree of automation and high performance. These techniques will then be applied to optimise the design of blood flow stents and tidal stream turbines in collaboration with academic and industrial partners
Your Profile
Interested applicants should:
- Hold a master’s degree or equivalent in Mathematics, Computer Science, Scientific Computing, or related fields.
- Have demonstrated knowledge of partial differential equations and the finite element method.
- Have solid programming skills and experience writing non-trivial programs in Python.
- Demonstrate an excellent level of spoken and written English.
- Possess good interpersonal skills and show willingness to work as part of an international team.
