The University of Stavanger invites applications for a doctorate scholarship in Mathematical Modeling at Department of Petroleum Engineering (IPT).

This is a trainee position that will mainly give promising researchers an opportunity for professional development leading to a doctoral degree.

The research fellow will be appointed for three years with only research duties. The position is vacant from 1. January, 2017. The appointee can accede when he/she is admitted to the PhD program in petroleum technology with an agreement to complete the doctorate within the duration of the scholarship.

This PhD scholarship will focus on mathematical modeling of processes of relevance for life science/medical engineering.

At IPT research activity focuses on multiphase transport-reaction processes, both through experimental approaches as well as through development of mathematical models. These models are general enough to fit various interesting applications besides reservoir and wellbore flow, including multiphase behavior in the context of cell migration in tissue (e.g. cancer cell dynamics), traffic flow, transport in biological media, etc.

The position is funded by the Ministry of Education.

Stavanger University Hospital has received financial support from the Ministry of Health and Care Services to establish Norway Pumps & Pipes together with UiS, IRIS, and Greater Stavanger. The main purpose of Norway Pumps & Pipes is to provide a platform for transfer of technology, competence, and methods between petroleum and health, as a driver for innovation and value creation. In addition, Norway Pumps & Pipes aims at strengthen education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Applicants must have a strong academic background with a five-year master degree within mathematics/physics/engineering, preferably recently, or possess corresponding qualifications which could provide a basis for successfully completing a doctorate. Both the grade for the master's thesis and the weight average grade of the master's degree must individually be equivalent to or better than a B grade. Also applicants whom is in the final stage of their master degree will be taken into consideration. The chosen applicants must meet the given qualification before hiring.

Documented knowledge of theory for partial differential equations (PDEs) and experience with numerical methods solving such equations will strengthen the application.

By rating emphasis will be placed on the applicant's potential for doing research in the field described above, as well as that person's individual prerequisites for research education.

The appointee must be able to work independently and as a member of a team, be creative and innovative.
The research fellow must have a good command of both oral and written English.
This fellowship position is important for obtaining a scientific position at a University.

The doctorate will mainly be carried out at the University of Stavanger, apart from possibly a period of study abroad at a recognized and relevant research community.

The research fellow is salaried according to the State Salary Code, l.pl 17.515, code 1017, LR 20, ltr 50 of NOK 435 500 per annum.

The position provides for automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which guarantees favourable retirement benefits. Members may also apply for home investment loans at favourable interest rates.
